Exploring Flat Weave Kilim Bags: The Differences Between Soumak and Kilim Weaves
We’ve recently expanded our collection to include Soumak bags, adding to our longstanding range of Kilims.
Soumak is a type of flat weave, somewhat resembling Kilim, but with a thicker weave, a smooth front face and a ragged back, where Kilim is smooth on both sides.
Soumak rugs boast a unique weave that sets them apart from Kilims. Crafted on a loom with vertical warp threads, Soumaks feature weft yarns intricately wrapped around these threads. The result is a robust, reversible rug with a texture akin to knit on one side and purl on the opposite, for our readers who are familiar with knitting. Our Soumaks are known for their exceptional durability.
Kilim rugs, on the other hand, employ a straightforward over-and-under weave with the warp threads. While thinner than Soumaks, Kilims also offer the versatility of being reversible. Both types benefit greatly from a quality rug pad, which not only extends the rug’s life but also prevents slipping, provides cushioning, and enhances the rug’s appearance on your floor.
